Vampires are mythological or folkloric beings who subsist by feeding on the life essence of living creatures, regardless of whether they are undead or a living person/being.

Vampires have populated folklore since the 18th century even though there is some evidence of it dating back to prehistoric times. The appearance of the vampire has evolved over time, from being corpse like figures in the early 1800s to being sparkly attractive, albeit pale, human-like figures.

One thing i have noticed over the past 15 years, specifically, is the increasing number of interest in the Vampire genre of films and TV series. From Buffy the Vampire Slayer, to True Blood and the Twilight trilogies, Vampires are starting to fascinate even the youngest viewers. One of the first Vampire films was Nosferatu, made in 1922, and was banned in some countries til the 70s because it was so terrifying. Below is a link to the entire film.

The Wikipedia page on Vampires is very interesting and reveals facts regarding the history and beliefs surrounding Vampires, including that the older Folkloric vampires weren’t believed to be sensitive to sunlight.

In modern culture Vampires are now seen as a sexy and mysterious being. With the likes of Spike from Buffy and Edward from Twilight becoming modern day pin ups for young girls. The Vampire culture has somewhat an air of romance about it. A pale man creeping into your room to suck on the blood from your neck and then perhaps turning you into an immortal being to spend eternity together……Kinda sweet really.

Sex and death have always blended effortlessly in films and television programmes, True Blood is one of the sexiest TV shows about, where vampires are praised for their sexual ability and all the girls seem to be flocking at their feet. Vampires are no longer something to fear, they are something to desire. Is this why there is a rise in modern day sightings of Vampires and a very heavy online presence of Vampire forums.
